Every experienced seller made some of these when they started. The good news is that each one has a clear fix. Here are the mistakes we see most often in new shops, grouped by where they do the most damage.

Mistakes that keep you from being found

1. Leaving tags empty or using single words. Etsy gives you thirteen tags, and each is a chance to match a search. Many new sellers use only a handful, or fill them with single words like “gift” that almost nobody types on their own. Use all thirteen, and make each a multi-word phrase a real buyer would search.

2. Writing titles for yourself, not buyers. A title like “My Lovely Handmade Creation” tells Etsy nothing. Lead with the specific phrase buyers actually type. If you are not sure which phrases those are, keyword research is the place to start, and Toolsy’s Keyword Search shows which ones have real demand.

3. Chasing only the biggest keywords. Targeting “necklace” alone means fighting millions of listings. Specific, longer phrases are easier to rank for and bring buyers who already know what they want.

Mistakes with pricing

4. Underpricing. The most common mistake, and the most damaging. New sellers price to cover materials and forget their time, Etsy’s fees, and shipping. Price so your shop can survive a whole busy month, not just break even on one order.

5. Ignoring the true cost of shipping. Offering “free shipping” without building it into the price quietly eats your margin. Make it a deliberate decision, and remember that buyers compare the total cost, not just the item price.

Mistakes in the listing itself

6. Weak photos. On Etsy, photos do the selling. A dark or cluttered first photo loses the click before a buyer ever reads your title. Natural light, a clean background, and shots that show scale and real use beat any clever trick.

7. Thin descriptions. Your first line or two should confirm the buyer is in the right place and answer the obvious questions: size, material, and what actually arrives. Do not bury the essentials under a long personal story.

Mistakes in how you run the shop

8. Setting and forgetting. A shop is not a billboard you hang once. Listings that never change tend to fade. Check your stats and separate two very different problems: listings that get views but no sales, versus listings that get almost no views. Our guide to listing quality explains why they need different fixes.

9. Comparing your day one to someone’s year five. The shops on page one have years of reviews and sales feeding their ranking. You are not behind; you are early. Put your energy into steadily improving your own listings rather than the leaders you cannot outrank yet.

None of these take special talent to fix, just attention. Start with your tags and your first photo, work through the rest one at a time, and the shop you end up with is already ahead of most new sellers.
